Are we all enjoying this delightful weather..? I won’t beat around the bush, it’s not the summery Summer we were all hoping for but before you get back under your duvet and refuse to come out here are some ideas to keep a bright outlook and hey, you never know, we may get some sunshine (mid-July for my Birthday would be nice..)
No one is more down in the dumps about this weather than me (I got back from Spain yesterday, 38 degrees! I’m bloody freezing!) but with true British stubbornness I won’t let this deter me. As you will have gathered, wine is my thing (and what a thing to have!) but I’m also a lover of spirits and am always on the hunt for new and interesting concoctions. Pimm’s is the epitome of British Summer drinking but getting a jug of it in my local pub with just one measly bit of orange and far too much ice has put me off slightly. And so I introduce the most incredible alternative to enjoy at home. Sipsmith’s Summer Cup. If you haven’t heard about these guys already let me elaborate, they’re a boutique distillery in the leafy West London suburb of Hammersmith that make incredible gin (no, really, it’ll change your life) and vodka all in what can only be described as a glorified garage. They’ve concocted their own version of Pimms and it’s so tasty you don’t need to add tonnes of fruit, they infuse it with all sorts including Earl Grey tea, cucumber and orange zest so it definitely packs a punch. Totally British and totally perfect for watching Wimbledon with and cheering on Murray, you never know, this might be his year.. Check out their website here for more info and truly delicious cocktail ideas.
As I mentioned, I’ve recently been doing absolutely nothing but read, eat and drink in Spain with my girlfriends. We went to the local Aldi (a fine establishment) and I was like a kid in a sweet shop, well, a twenty something girl hyperventilating about the ridiculously cheap prices of okay-looking wine! I bought a case of an amazing Rueda (a great Spanish white wine) for €1.79 per bottle and do you know what? It was great. Light, zesty, fresh and easy drinking. Now I can’t promise that you’ll find any wine as cheap as that, but, you can buy great Spanish whites for £6 – £8 in your local supermarket/wine shop. Look out for them, if you like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio etc definitely have a try. Something different but delicious.
If all else fails, get yourself an awesome summer-filled playlist (obvious inclusions are ‘Here Comes the Sun’ by The Beatles, ‘Summertime’ by Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff and ‘In the Summertime’ by Mungo Jerry) get some Sipsmith’s Summer Cup, some rosé (see previous blog post for ideas) a buffet of salads and prepare to dance into the wee hours (especially if someone ‘accidentally’ puts a Spice Girls medley on..) If, like me, you don’t have a garden or viable party space either go to a friends house who does (you know who you are) or gate-crash your local park.
Well, I hope that helps. I can’t magic-away the bad weather but sensible (ish) intoxication on decent stuff, lots of twisting and shouting might just banish those blues..
